Shear Wave Transducers
GB Inspection System’s Shear Wave series of transducers are available in a wide range of specifications with single or twin crystal options for general purpose ultrasonic testing, flaw detection through to application specific inspections.
Shear Wave transducers are recommended for inspecting parts with inclined flaws such as welds. The shear wave is when the particles of the medium vibrate in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation. They use refraction to transmit shear waves at a predetermined angle and the active crystal(s) are mounted on integral wedges. For testing, a couplant layer such as a gel, oil or paste is required.
Please take a look at our extensive range of Shear Wave transducers following the above options (Single or Twin).

Ultrasonic Single Crystal transducers fulfill most of the test tasks in practice. Furthermore they are required when (in rare cases) tandem or delta technique is applied.
Twin Crystal/Dual element or TR transducers (one transmitter and one receiver) are recommended when near surface resolution (for example, detection of small defects in small depth) has to be improved.
Benefits & Key Points about our Shear Wave Transducers
- Standard angles available are 38°, 45°, 60°, 70°; other angles are available upon request
- Ergonomically-designed in durable and robust metal housings
- Thicker shoes are available for extended life of the transducer or to contour the wedge to a specific pipe diameter.
- Contoured contact face available to match convex and concaved testing surfaces
- High Temperature wedges are also available, please visit our High Temperature category for product information
- All standard connector styles can be offered within our Shear Wave range
- Twin Crystal provide improved near-surface resolution and superior signal to noise ratio, especially when testing rough and thin surfaces
- Integral Cables available on the majority of our range where applicable
